My wife’s Prius got chopped last Sunday night. The car was parked right outside our bedroom window, which is on the ground floor.
It’s been a week, and police haven’t even responded. A new cat is $150 with the o2 sensor so insurance wouldn’t cover it anyway. Just one of those times where life kicks you in the dick and you have to roll with it.
The good news is they did a pretty clean job and I think I’ll have enough pipe to weld to on the back end. I have to wait and see when the new cat gets here.

I’m sure the thief will use the proceeds to buy kids breakfast or something

That sucks man!
On the bright side, the Prius probably sounds like a clapped out shitty stock car....let’s get some audio clips of some nice revs?
Backstory, my cousin thought it’d be cool to cut the exhaust of his hand-me-down v6 Buick in college and it ki nd a sounded cool at idle and with a little rev but damn it was annoying AF to be in the car while driving.

Well, that sucks.
People will steal anything. When our neighborhood was new and we hadn’t built fences yet, my next door neighbor had a fry daddy stolen off his back porch. He had just finished frying fish and had set it outside, still full of hot oil. He stepped outside to check on it 10 minutes later and it was gone. The thief didn’t even dump the oil in the yard. I imagine he took it home, plugged it in, and started frying up his own fish as soon as hit was hot enough.

Yeah, or make a donation to a local church. That’s what usually happens anyway.

Silly, Pruises are electric and don’t need oil or tail pipes .
It’s just weight saving now.

The 2nd gen Prius apparently is the favorite among catalytic converter aficionados . I did get to spend some time on the Prius chat forums which is always good for entertainment.

It sounds kinda mean actually. I will take some rev videos before I fix it.
When I did the headers on the range rover I drove it to the exhaust shop to get the Y pipe made and this is every bit as loud as that was .

Haha, that sounds like a tweaker to me.
I didn’t know people still stole cats. I mean, a brand new one cost $110 with free shipping, how much can they be getting for it at the scrap yard?

Around here? $100 to $200. You can get more if it still has the flanges i.e. not stolen. Surprised my Prius hasn’t been hit yet. Couldn’t keep them on the Xterra, and they were tucked way up in there. After losing the second set (all 4 of them) , I just straight piped it and lived with the check engine light.

Of course. Only dorks and karens don’t want heroin.

I would imagine it’s because of the ride height

We live on the second floor and in the middle of the night someone brought an aluminum extension ladder here and tried lifting one of the bicycles on the neighbors balcony which was leaning against the railing. Someone spotted him and called the cops but no one here had any idea anything had even happened until the cops showed up to investigate . Dude took off without the bike or the ladder. Cops let the neighbor keep the ladder, so chalk one up for the good guy’s for once... though the ladder was probably stolen too.

It is also a feat of engineering to get up in there. The cats are tucked way up in the transmission tunnel, above the torsion bars. Honestly, I wasn’ t even mad, they were hollowed out by the previous owner. Insurance replaced them. It was the first time the check engine light was off in years. 8 months later they were gone again. Kinda hope it was the same person, really.

how do they do that without making enough noise for someone to hear?

In my neck of the woods, SF Bay Area, scrap yards won’t buy cats.

I wanted to know the exhaust pipe size without going under the car to measure. I found a thread where someone else had the same issue, and it ended with some hilariously petty bickering.

The blast music really loud so you dont hear the saw. The next morning I vaguely remembered hearing some heavy bass music as I was was falling asleep. It must have happened then.

That sucks but $120 for a cat isn’t bad, they’re $250 each on my car and closer to $400 or $500 on second gen Prii

So, exactly how does a Prius sound with no exhaust?
